Wonder

Wonder - R.J. Palacio Oh god!!! What a wonder!!! I have to gather my thoughts on this book but it's safe to say this is one of the best books I have read so far this year. RTC.

Th1rt3en - a gripping court room thriller

Thirteen - Steve Cavanagh

Synopsis

Eddie Flynn, a conman turned defense lawyer believes his client who is touted to be the next big thing in Hollywood, is not a murderer. Joshua Kane, a killer, kills to get a seat in the jury. In this cat and mouse story can Eddie Flynn catch the murderer before it's too late?

Ruminations

I thoroughly enjoyed the writing, the plot, and its treatment. This recipe had the right amount of plot twists, action, humor, and brilliance, making it a yummy dish of a story. Eddie Flynn is a flawed hero. His personal life is nonexistent, he has self-sabotaged his relationships. He has a hero complex that comes in the way of him achieving anything good for himself. Yet this very hero complex makes him root for the people who otherwise are beyond help. A protagonist that's worth rooting for.

I liked the friendships portrayed in the story. Especially his and Harry's.

I liked how this story didn't have any sleaze or curse words. Generally, stories such as these are liberally sprinkled with sex scenes (usually unrelated to the plot) or/and with generous curse words just to show how bad/cool a character is. I don't mind that, but, in fast-paced stories such as these, I prefer not to get distracted by romantic detours and too much insight on a villain's mental makeup. This author didn't resort to any such unnecessary tactics. The antagonist is shrewd, a thinking and extremely dangerous villain and that's that.

This is a police, court procedural story and that's usually a hit or miss with me. This was one of the rare good ones that I liked.

The court scenes are a real treat. It's not as crisp and electrifying as in other novels you might have read. But, the author has written it in a very visual way and that's a sure page-turner.

Go for it if you want a cool courtroom drama where the serial killer is just around the corner and keeps messing up with the best-laid plans of powers that be.

Ruminations

Ok, I DID know, going into this book, that, this was a strange one. No kidding! Honestly, I cannot elucidate more on the point of reading this book. I did not gain any new story, perspective or information.

I feel like I have no memory of what I knew before reading this book and what I learned after reading this book. There's nothing in between, no change before and after reading this book.

Every book is an experience. Even a thrashy romance novel gives us experience. What exactly did this book give? Honestly, I have no clue. I read it for the sake of reading it and strangely enough, I didn't want to DNF it. Does that say something about me or the book?

I really want to talk to people who liked or disliked this book. Because as I said, I didn't feel a thing. The first book that made me feel a sense of detachment was this. I could honestly not feel any emotions. Even boredom felt like an emotion wasted on this book.

For starters, there is not much of a story. Most of the book felt like a philosophical rambling of a broken, seriously delusional and damaged mind.

Guess that's the thin line between an enlightened being and the delusional ones. People who come in contact with them most certainly think of them as crazy.

I am from India so philosophical, deep ramblings are nothing new to me. Even an average person has this sense of real & unreal. Illusion and reality. People are aware of these concepts. But this book felt incomplete and seeking in every sense.

It looked like the Author turned his personal diary into a novel. Like I got a discrete look into somebody's seeking. It was jarring, unreal and honestly, I felt like a person who got caught reading somebody's diary. What do you do if you do read a person's diary? I probably might ignore it and that's what I am going to do with this book and it's contents. I have no idea what else to do with it. I have no way of compartmentalizing this book into the obvious shelves of my mind. So I dump it in a corner and hope to forget it over time.

Sometimes people write books for the sake of sounding deep with not much value addition. I couldn't place the genre of the book nor its intent. The only word I can commit to this book is: Strange. This book was strange. Neither was it useful nor useless. Neither was it filled with information nor devoid of it. Neither was it entertaining nor unentertaining. It was a book that could have very well existed and not existed. It wouldn't have made a difference either way.

Would I recommend this book? Yes and No. Yes, if you want to get your brain jerked off from your usual routine and dropped off into an alternate crazy universe for a few hours. Read it to experience the state of not understanding and understanding at the same time.

I confer that writing a book that balances the dualities delicately is an art but I am not mature or intelligent enough to comment on if this author has done that.

I do consume my share of "strange/weird" fiction/non-fiction books, but I guess I too have my limits. This book was one such. It was not too much in any sense but I felt like it didn't serve me any purpose at any level, be it at an intellectual/emotional/spiritual level. I didn't even get a simple sense of fulfillment that you might get reading, say, a chick-lit or a cool high fantasy.

I liked the font & size, it made reading so effortless and easy. The language too was quite unassuming and it let me focus on the plot and story instead of on the writing &/or its flaws. The description of the scenes was too good, they were quite visual and I was instantly transported to whatever hell/heaven he was describing.

There was a feeling of hopelessness, not fear, not terror, but a feeling of hopelessness throughout the book.

I liked the way the protagonist saw and observed the habitats. The belief that there are multiple universes gained some validity here. For the organisms living in the habitat that's their universe, a universe within a universe. Your universe is only as much as your awareness stretches isn't it? That was profound and I loved reading about it.

This book is the first book of the Southern Reach series and I am not sure if I'll continue with the series. I Will let you know if I do.

Conclusion

Read it if you want to mess with your brain and perception a bit, not much, but a little. It might not give you the satisfaction of reading a good story or of learning more about characters and their idiosyncrasies. But, you may experience a different kind of world and you may experience a sense of hopelessness and pointlessness like never before. This is most certainly a different read. Give it a try if such books are your cup of chai.

Mitosis

Mitosis - Brandon Sanderson 3.5

I am not sure why Brandon Sanderson wrote this filler book. This one is more of a short story than a novella. Nothing unique, just one more epic down that's all. The writing was as good as in Steelheart ( duh! It's Brandon Sanderson). This book too had horrible, cute metaphors courtesy David Charleston. Some of his crazy metaphors:

" It's okay, I'm a rhinoceros astronaut" , what??

Another 1:

If a powerful one decided to step into Steelheart's place, the police force would be worth less than a bagful of snakes at a dance competition.

See what I mean when I say David & his super crazy metaphors are made for each other?

I only hope Brandon continues with this running joke throughout this series.

I began firefight & found mention of mitosis in it hence I had to read this 1. I am not sure if this filler book is mandatory reading b4 continuing on with the series. I also think u won't miss much if you skip this 1.

A Midsummer's Equation

A Midsummer's Equation - Keigo Higashino This was an ok book for me. Too many plotlines, too many investigations. Everything did come together in the end but it was not half as satisfactory or enjoyable as the other books. I did like Yukawa & kyohei's mentor mentee kind of relationship. But Yukawa's genius & deciphering skills were not quite on display as expected in a series named after him. Also what was the role of desmec anyway? It didn't make any sense to include a huge corporation. The equation is not accurate after all? Good read just not the best.

The Devotion of Suspect X

The Devotion of Suspect X - Keigo Higashino, Alexander O. Smith, Elye J. Alexander Woah!!!! What a mind wrangling book!!! This was a gripping, thrilling, confusing, awesome story. What seemed idiotic in the beginning seemed logical in the end. What seemed unbelievable seemed the only believable thing in the end. I probably have to read this again to soak in the nuances but

City of Bones

City of Bones - Cassandra Clare 3.5

This book starts well, in fact till about 3/4th of the book it's unputdownable. It's super-fast, interesting and well written. I couldn't care much for the characters though, I disliked Clary or Jace as the main characters. Luke was likable but the rest of the characters were unremarkable. This is a proper YA fantasy which is to say I probably would have liked it better in my teenage years than now. This book distinctly reminded me of my age and how I am not the target audience of this book. So if I am not raving about this book it's partly because of that.

This book has a lot of themes similar to Harry potter. Saved by mother/her love. Close relative/friend a werewolf. An institute/learning center. A muggle in the Harry Potter world is a mundane here. Somebody even turns into a mouse just as in Harry Potter! But the similarities end right there.

While Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone (Btw Harry potter is Middle grade it's not even YA) is intriguing enough to warrant a read multiple times, this might not even entice me to read it a second time. The supposed twist near the end is what killed this book for me. I detested the twist and I was surprised by the ending, not in a good way but in a way where I was turning the pages to see if they are torn out/are missing. The ending felt incomplete and was dissatisfying. I agree this is a part of a series, but even in a series, every book has a logical ending. A story is completed with some cliffhanger/s left for the readers to continue from in the next book. But this book's ending was anti-climactic and very disappointing so much so that I am not sure if I'll continue with the next book in the series.

Two conflicting opinions are playing into my decision of continuing with this series. One, this book felt quite juvenile to me, even by YA standards. Second, I have heard and continue hearing good things about this series in Social media. So, I have decided to put this series on the backburner for now. I am planning to read quite a few series in 2020. (Expect a post on it soon!) hence I currently don't have the bandwidth for this series but it still will be on my TBR list owing to its popularity and cult status.

Saga, Volume 1

Saga, Volume 1 - Brian K. Vaughan, Fiona Staples Liked it. Though I wasn't as mesmerized by it as the hype surrounding it suggested, I still did enjoy reading this novel. The artwork was ok. Loved the premise, the dialogues were superb! Liked Marco but didn't warm up to Alana, not sure why. I am sure it's just gonna get more interesting. Hence, definitely reading the next volume. So yeah, pick it up for a nice adult (sci-fi + fantasy) graphic novel read.
